Quickstart

As soon as you log on to SimWAPS, you'll be taken to the home view. This view is organized to provide a maximum of informations.

Calculation cases are launched from the User Input Section on the left of the screen.

The calculation sequence is as follows:

  1. Selection of a wind propulsion solution
  2. Adjusting parameters for this solution,
  3. Selection of a route, for which weather statistics have been previously calculated,
  4. Choosing a ship type & adjusting its characteristics.

Each parameter can be adjusted within a defined range of values, depending on the type of propulsor selected. This flexibility make it possible to take account of variations in the performance of the same technology from one supplier to another.

The aim of SimWAPS is to evaluate the potential of differents solutions, not to provide a precise value for a particular solution.

If you need more precise results, please contact CRAIN for a personalized study.

Default values are directly proposed for each parameter and each propulsion solution. These values are based on CRAIN aerodynamic experience. If in doubt, keep the default values, but feel free to vary them to see the influence of different parameters.

Throughout this process, contextual information buttons ( image.png ) will provide you with valuable assistance. They will help you better understand the parameters and their impact on performance. You'Il also be redirected to a dedicated section of this documentation for more detailled information on each parameter.

Finally, click on Submit to launch the calculations, which are instantly displayed. The results page consists of the following elements :

2 Overview Reminder of computation cae parameters
3 Main results  Fuel savings expressed in various forms
4 Graphics Graph of propulsive force as a function of apparent wind angle

The results section shows :

This ratio is highly indicative. It is based on an estimate of ship resistance to foward motion.
